Mob Despawn Rates

This configuration sets custom despawn ranges for various categories of mobs on the server, categorized by soft and hard ranges. The distances are specified in blocks.

Soft Despawn Range (28 blocks)

  • 28 blocks: Mobs within this range from a player will not despawn. Once a mob moves beyond this range, it enters the soft despawn range where it is more likely to despawn, but not guaranteed.

    • Ambient

      • Example: Bats

    • Axolotls

    • Creature

      • Example: Cows, Pigs, Sheep

    • Misc

      • Example: Item frames, Armor stands

    • Monster

      • Example: Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers

    • Underground Water Creature

      • Example: Squid, Glow Squid

    • Water Ambient

      • Example: Fish

    • Water Creature

      • Example: Dolphins, Turtles

Hard Despawn Range (96 blocks)

  • 96 blocks: Mobs beyond this range from a player will despawn almost immediately to help manage server performance. This is the hard despawn limit.

    • Ambient

      • Example: Bats

    • Axolotls

    • Creature

      • Example: Cows, Pigs, Sheep

    • Misc

      • Example: Item frames, Armor stands

    • Monster

      • Example: Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers

    • Underground Water Creature

      • Example: Squid, Glow Squid

    • Water Ambient

      • Example: Fish

    • Water Creature

Explanation

  • Soft Despawn Range (28 blocks): This is the range within which mobs will not despawn, but beyond which they are more likely to despawn if they enter the soft range.

    • This helps keep mobs near active players while allowing for a natural reduction in mob counts further away from players.

  • Hard Despawn Range (96 blocks): This is the absolute limit beyond which mobs will despawn almost immediately.

    • This helps maintain server performance by preventing mobs from lingering far away from players where they serve no gameplay purpose.
